error number 0x8009000b trying send mail

Error Number: 0x8009000B when trying to send mail

I get the following error when trying to send or receive mail using Microsoft Mail in Vista Beta 2:
An
unknown error has occurred. Error Number: 0x8009000B
I set up Outlook 2007 using the same account credentials and it works fine. The same account also works using Thunderbird. When receiving mail it appears to connect and start to download the mail then kicks to the error. If I have no mail available it appears to connect and never prompts with an error.
I tried to track it with the windows mail log file, but no log was created.
I couldn't find anything on the net that helped either. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I just wanted to add that it is a pop3 account through cox.net. Not hotmail, Gmail, etc.

That's a connection error. Have you looked at your setup under Windows Mail, Tools/Options/Connections? Windows Mail share the same connection settings as Internet Explorer. Check in the message store directory for the log file (Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder). Probably won't help though.
Try
removing the mail account, closing and then reopening WinMail and then try adding it back again.

Try setting up a log for SMTP transactions. Click on the menu for Tools/Options, Maintenance tab and you'll see an option at the bottom to create a troubleshooting log for SMTP events which will be saved in your Message Store folder. Then I would agree with Steve's recommendation. Try deleting the account completely in Windows mail (Tools/Accounts - Mail tab) and then close and reopen Windows Mail and try recreating it and test it again. Since Vista does not presently have telnet installed by default, there is no easy way to use it to check on the account, but deleting it, closing Windows Mail and reopening it and creating the account anew may help fix it. Good luck. -- Jim Pickering MVP-Outlook Express/Windows Mail Please reply to newsgroup only so that others may be helped with your feedback.

Hola!
I am running SAVCE 10 but no email scanning.
My server settings are:
pop.central.cox.net smtp.central.cox.net
I know the settings are correct since these exact settings are working in both Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird. I have matched every setting between Windows Mail and Outlook, but the Windows Mail client won't play.

I also am running SAVCE 10.0.1.628 scan engine 61.1.0.11
It is running in unmanaged mode.
This is from the documentation from Symantec regarding e-mail scanning:
Symantec AntiVirus Email protection is not supported ---------------------------------------------------- All Email snap-ins are not installed in this release of Symantec AntiVirus for Vista.
So, e-mail scanning is not turned on and cannot be turned on for this version of SAVCE in unmanaged mode.
So, we are not fighting an e-mail scanning time-out.

My first impression is that this SAVCE is causing the problem or its due to the fact that you have two betas installed. Since others can get the POP3 to work okay, you might try removing those other programs (or at least disabling SAVCE and then rebooting) and then testing if that makes a difference.
Try using msconfig and disable all non-MS services and applications at startup. That might help narrow it down. The logfile indicates that its getting the message, so something is interposed and I suspect its Symantec interfering although they say otherwise. It wouldn't be the first time.

I tried disabling SAVCE and turned off everything in startup I could. Still get the same error when I send. I even went through and killed processes that were not system related.
Nothing.
I can't imagine what has happened here. I may try removing SAVCE just to see if that does it.
It is odd to me that Outlook would work fine, yet Windows Mail won't.
Is it possible that Windows Defender would be interfering? I am grasping at straws...

Ok, I removed SAVCE client. I reset the PC. I deleted my account settings in Microsoft Mail. I disabled all services I could that were not system critical. I rebooted. I then added my mail account credentials in Microsoft Mail.
I get the same error.
I also went through Defender and verified that MS Mail was allowed. I checked my Windows Firewall settings as well.
This is getting ridiculous!

Well, I'm stumped. Sounds like some dll got messed up or something is not working properly. I can't pin it down though. Does telnet work?

Ok, I removed SAVCE client. I reset the PC. I deleted my account settings in Microsoft Mail. I disabled all services I could that were not system critical. I rebooted. I then added my mail account credentials in Microsoft Mail.
I get the same error.
I also went through Defender and verified that MS Mail was allowed. I checked my Windows Firewall settings as well.
This
is getting ridiculous!

Nothing.
I can't imagine what has happened here. I may try removing SAVCE just to see if that does it.
It is odd to me that Outlook would work fine, yet Windows Mail won't.
Is it possible that Windows Defender would be interfering? I am grasping at straws...

I ran it with no mail then sent a test mail from another account. The mail starts to download (It appears to) and then I get the error.
OK, so it is indeed with receiving, too? Do you have antivirus software with email scanning activated running in the background? Could you please give us the server names you have configured in your account?

Telnet... haven't even attempted. Is there any way to reinstall the Mail app short of reinstalling the OS? It isn't worth it to me to make it go. I am fine using Thunderbird or Outlook for now, but it bothers me that it is still not working... Just doesn't make any sense. Like you said, there HAS to be something screening the files as they come down... something like an AV or anti-spyware, firewall... SOMETHING...
But all I have install is MS products.
Oh well... This stuff is all in beta for a reason I guess...
Thanks for all of your help anyway.

You can try going to Control Panel | Programs | Set Program Access and defaults and set OE default and see if that fixes it.
I'm not convinced its a problem with WinMail per se, rather than the means by which WinMail connects, and so that's why I suggested telnetting.

I just wanted to see that you could telnet to the servers to verify you could connect that way.
Its
just diagnostic though. It won't fix the problem. I'm stumped on this one. That's one reason not to do multiple betas at once.

No need to telnet to answer that question. I can successfully get my mail from this exact account using Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird both. So the glitch definitely related to Microsoft Mail (or something that is trying to scan MS Mail).
So, fortunately I have at least 3 working options (Outlook, Thunderbird, Webmail).
So, no big deal, but I am quite curious to say the least.
